The Smart Step OTS (Off-the-Shelf) brace is great for Drop Foot as it helps restore a natural heel strike. This is accomplished by pushing the foot into gentle dosiflexion (brings the foot up) during the swing phase and then decelerates the foot during heel strike.

The assistance helps prevent foot slap while allowing plantarflexion, something traditional devices do not do. Plantarflexion is required to press the gas pedal of a car for example. Without a device at heel strike, the foot will slap down to the ground or plantarflex too quickly, with this device, the foot will gently land on the ground at plantarflexion

Sizing
If you have wide feet, with a heel width of greater than 2.5 inches, then go with the large, if you have a narrow foot, with a heel width less than 2.5 inches, then go with the small.

Features of the Smart Step Brace
  • If you have wide feet, with a heel width of greater than 2.5 inches, then go with the large, if you have a narrow foot, with a heel width less than 2.5 inches, then go with the small.
  • Assists walking by lifting the foot up and bringing it down with resistance.
  • A pre-load controls deceleration when the heel contacts the ground to prevent 'foot slap'.
  • Gives you more shock absorption than other types of drop foot braces via the preload.
  • Avoids the malleoli bone (either of the two rounded protuberances on each side of the ankle) to reduce irritation.
  • Lower profile design let's you wear most types of shoes.

Step-Smart Break-in Instructions:

It is recommended to get the foot accustomed to your brace:

  • Day One: Wear the brace 1 hour in the morning and then 1 hour in the afternoon.
  • Day Two: Increase to 2 hours in the morning and 2 in the afternoon.
  • Day Three: Increase to 3 hours in the morning and 3 in the afternoon.
  • Day Four: Increase to 4 hours in the morning and 4 in the afternoon.
  • Day Five: Increase to 5 hours in the morning and 5 in the afternoon.
  • Day Six: Increase to 6 hours in the morning and 6 in the afternoon.
During this first week, it is important for you to examine your feet visually after each wearing period. Red marks are normal (like the kind you get from your socks), but they should go away in 30 minutes. If not, contact your health care provider.

Other notes:

  • For ease of donning, put the brace in the shoe first, then use the loop in back to help pull the brace and shoe on together.
  • Always use a sock under the brace that is high enough so that it is higher than the top of the brace.
  • Always use a shoe with the brace.
  • The brace is mostly water resistant and you should not hesitate to wash it or use it in the water. The two rivots on the calf section may rust slightly, but will not fail easily.
  • Seat the brace back in the shoe utilizing the included velcro.

Adjustability:
The joints may be customized to one of five different levels of dorsiflexion assistance. The practitioner can determine the proper level of dorsiflexion assistance by evaluating the patient's step-length, weight and other factors. In general, the compression components are chosen to match the patient's specific shock absorption requirements.
